Although July is historically the hottest month of the year, August is still known to bring extremely hot temperatures that can feel even hotter with high levels of humidity in the air. When you aren’t able to rely on your air conditioner to reduce the effects of extreme heat, here are a few tips to stay safe and avoid a potentially life-threatening heat stroke.
1. Stay Updated on the Local Weather
Make it a point to watch your local news for the latest weather updates, including any heat advisories that might have been issued. Many smartphones are equipped with alerts that can advise you on when risky weather is approaching.
2. Stay Hydrated with Plenty of Water
Keep a water bottle filled with water and ice nearby at all times. If you wait to drink when you’re feeling thirsty, your body is already starting to get dehydrated. If necessary, set an alarm on your phone to remind yourself to drink more.
3. Choose Lightweight, Loose-Fitting Clothing
Tight clothing and heavier fabrics trap heat close to your skin and don’t allow moisture to evaporate easily. They can raise your body’s temperature and increase the effects that a heat wave has on you.
4. Eat Small Meals More Often
Instead of eating three large meals, opt for smaller meals that are eaten every couple of hours. Doing so helps ensure that your body isn’t overloading itself when it’s already trying to keep you cool. Eating smaller meals more frequently can also help keep your energy levels up. This is especially important if you’re one of those people who doesn’t feel like eating as much as you normally would because of the heat.
5. Stay Indoors as Much as Possible
If possible, avoid being outside for any long length of time. Try to complete any outdoor chores very early in the morning before the sun comes out in full force. If you must be outside, avoid strenuous exercise or activity.
6. Take Frequent Breaks
Sometimes being outside during times of extreme heat is unavoidable. Be sure to take frequent breaks out of the heat and sun if possible. Implement a buddy system if you must work outdoors and set an alarm on your phone to make sure that you check in with each other frequently.
