Florida summers mean you count on your air conditioning system to keep you cool and comfortable. This is something that makes the hot weather bearable — even if your electric bill makes you cringe. But, your bill doesn’t have to keep climbing along with the temperature outside. You can keep your home cool and your utilities under control with an energy efficient, or high SEER rating, unit.
What is a SEER Rating?
A SEER rating is the amount of cooling (measured in British Thermal Units or BTUs) that an air conditioner produces divided by the electricity — or watts — that is used. This figure is called the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). A high SEER means that an HVAC system is more efficient.
The SEER rating of older air conditioning units was typically 10 and under. It’s not uncommon for today’s HVAC systems to have SEER ratings that top 23. As of 2005, all residential HVAC systems manufactured in the United States are required to have a SEER rating of at least 13. You can usually find the information about your air conditioning unit’s SEER rating on the Energy Guide sticker on the outside of the system.
What Does This Mean for You?
Replacing on old conditioning system is a significant investment for any homeowner. By doing so, though, you can expect to see an increase in its efficiency. This would then translate to a reduction in the amount of power that your HVAC unit consumes.
For example: If you replaced an outdated and inefficient air conditioning unit that has a SEER rating of 9 with a new HVAC system with a SEER rating of 13 — which is the lowest available — your energy consumption would be reduced by nearly 30%. This can translate to hundreds of dollars in utility savings over the course of the year without having to change your cooling habits.
